Compatibility

Suitable for scanning 35mm film out of the box. The standard holder can be replaced with a variant showing the sprockets of the film. In the future, it will be compatible with smaller film sizes like APS, 110 and 126 film.

Most interchangeable-lens digital cameras make excellent scanning cameras. You will need a macro lens capable of focusing to 1:1 magnification to scan 35mm film. Most of those lenses available will be compatible.

Need help determining what lens to get?

We do not recommend using lenses than the following focal lengths:

• Full frame: Shorter than 55mm, Longer than 105mm
• APS-C: Shorter than 40mm - Longer than 70mm
• M4/3: Shorter than 40mm - Longer than 60mm
• Longer focal lenses can work, but we cannot guarantee there are enough included tubes to use the combination. Shorter focal length lenses can cause vignetting
• If you are unsure or want to test yourself, follow THIS guide and check that the distance you found is shorter than 230mm
• We recommend using thin cotton gloves while scanning to prevent damage to the film

Materials

The easy35 is a premium product. It is constructed from quality materials because scanning demands precision, and inferior materials do not yield a precision device.

The housing is crafted from Nylon 12, an exceptionally robust plastic that is both rigid and incredibly durable. This material is also ideal for additive manufacturing. It is produced using an additive manufacturing technique known as MJF, enabling the creation of complex shapes. This results in a device that's stronger, lighter, and more compact.

The tubes, including the part that facilitates tube rotation for rotational adjustment, are made from aluminium and are anodised with a super-matte finish. While this makes the tube somewhat heavy, it ensures it is incredibly rigid. The precise threading not only enhances the user experience but also guarantees that the device aligns perfectly with the sensor. Additionally, the super-matte finish ensures no reflections bounce back onto the film.

Inside, there's a secondary diffuser crafted from a Plexiglas diffuser acrylic designed explicitly for LED diffusion. This ensures no colour shift and promises consistency, with a guarantee against yellowing for 30 years.

Unlike cheaper solutions, the easy35 has a light system based around a powerful and high-quality light source.

Accessories

The easy35 can mount the easy35 duster on it and has interchangeable holders.

The easy35 has replaceable film holders. Currently, only the standard 35mm holder and the 35mm Sprocket holder are available. By the end of 2023, there will be the following available: 50x50mm mounted slide holder, APS, 110, 126.

To use this product, you need an interchangeable-lens digital camera and a macro lens to focus on a 1:1 reproduction ratio.

The requirements are:

• Compatible filter thread (see list in the link above or our listing
• Focal length within the range for that sensor size (see link above
• Macro focusing to 1:1 or beyond (refer to manufacturer specification)
• The lens has to be able to focus to 1:1 or beyond (2:1 is focusing beyond - double size, 1:2 is focusing to half the size of the sensor)

Valoi says that all system cameras that mount a macro lens work for your camera to comply. Fixed-lens cameras do not work, as none has a true 1:1 macro.

"While reading an online review for the VALOI Easy35 film scanner I was persuaded to buy the kit to use with my Canon R5 camera. A suitable macro lens of nominally 100mm focal length for full frame is needed, but the plus point is that a copy stand is not. I already own a Canon macro EF100mm f2.8 USM lens and an EF to RF convertor so there was no added cost. I bought the VALOI Easy35 from FirstCall, which arrived within a couple of days, undamaged in a strong outer carton. The product is presented in a custom-made Ecofriendly printed display box. The interior needs strengthening to hold the Easy35 components in place as the movement during shipping had torn the card allowing them to move. However, all the components were unblemished – the tubes being wrapped in tissue. The instruction booklet included with the kit is both comprehensive and easy to understand. Once the battery on the light unit was charged the next step was to select the correct number of tubes sections (these are supplied with the kit) to capture the full frame of the film with the smallest border. In my case this was 3 x 40mm sections and 1 x 10mm section: a total length of 130mm. The assembled tube is connected to the lens using the VALOI 58-62 adaptor supplied with the kit. The light source and film strip holder screws onto the other end of the tube assembly. The negative images were converted using the standalone FilmLab3 software, which can be downloaded as a free trial for thirty-six conversions. This is a well-made robust piece of kit that simplifies the scanning of film. To eliminate or minimise dust blemishes on the scanned image, I wore cotton gloves, cleaned the Easy35 light screen and film guide using a blower, and lightly dusted the film with a soft brush and a blower as it entered the light box. The software does include the choice of dust removal, which was effective. When available from FirstCall, I shall buy the adaptor for scanning mounted transparencies. I have no hesitation in recommending FirstCall. It offers a first-class service to customers, with competitive prices and fast delivery. "
