Product Description

Retro 400S (S=synthetic) is the successor to the Retro 400 (the old Agfa APX 400 film). Available in 35mm and 120 roll format, this film is closely related to the Rollei Superpan 200 and the Rollei IR film. Available in 35mm and 120 roll format.

Manufacturer's description

Rollei Retro 400 is a panchromatic sensitized Black & White film material with a high speed of ISO 400/27?. The film can be used as a general purpose photographic film suitable for all professional task. It has excellent sharpness and contrast as well as high edge sharpness.

The emulsion is coated on to a 95 micron cellulose triacetate base.

Rollei Retro 400 is equivalent in characteristics to Agfa APX 400 B&W film.

"I have long been a fan of Tri-X for 35mm photography but it is getting hard to find and very expensive so I've been looking for something else and Rollei 400S is my choice. I believe it is Agfa Aviphot film and it certainly benfits from some down-rating, which fits with Aviphot's ISO200 speed. I rate it at 200 in teh summer (when shadows tend to be darker) and 320 in the winter (when there is generally less contrast) and process it in Rodinal at 1:50 using a semi-stand technique that has drecreasing agitation during the first half of the development time then nothing to the second 12 minutes. The negatives hold good detail and have very modest grain, which is to my liking. I have yet explored the film's extended-red sensitivity.
