Because metol is relatively toxic and can cause skin sensitisation, modern commercial developers often use phenidone or dimezone S (4-hydroxymethyl-4-methyl-1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone) instead.

This developing agent is therefore great for student or home use as it is 'safer' to use. Ilford Multigrade and PQ Developers contain Dimezone S.

Dimezone-S keeps better in aqueous solution.
The molecular formula is C11H14N2O2
